Why this race matters

Texas is divided into 38 areas called districts, each with about 800,000 people. Every two years your district elects one U.S. Representative — one of 435 in Washington, and the only one who answers to you. They vote on laws that touch your health care, your taxes and your rights.

About Tanya

Lloyd grew up on 45 acres outside Lockhart in a house her family built with their own hands, went back to school at 33 to become a teacher, and has spent nearly twenty years in the poorest classrooms in rural Texas. Her line: it's hard to pull yourself up by your bootstraps "when you only have flip-flops."

She's a kindergarten teacher in Lockhart ISD today. Before teaching she worked at car dealerships, in accounting and in real estate; a high-risk pregnancy showed her how thin health care gets for women out here. She's running on what she calls an American Rural Revival — the rural hospitals closing, the schools starved of funding, the cost of just living — against a four-term Republican, Michael Cloud, who's voted with the party line since a 2018 special election.
